A Weekend of Connection at the Maryland Fly Fishing and Collectable Tackle Show

Attending the Maryland Fly Fishing and Collectable Tackle Show in Towson, MD, was nothing short of inspiring. One of the most noticeable and exciting shifts was the increase in female attendees. It’s heartening to see more women and girls embracing fly fishing and finding their place in this wonderful community.

The atmosphere was filled with a healing vibe—everyone carried a lightness, clearly stoked to get on the water. The soft strum of “Stop, children, what’s that sound…” floated through the venue, perfectly complementing the peaceful hum of fly tying demonstrations. Expert craftsmen skillfully wrapped thread and feathers, creating intricate and beautiful flies. The sea of plaid shirts added to the classic fly fishing charm.

It was a joy to catch up with friendly, familiar faces from Trout Unlimited MD, Casting for Recovery, and Chesapeake Women Anglers—organizations doing amazing work to foster community and conservation. Participating in the volunteer activities was a highlight, and I’m deeply grateful my children joined me. Watching them engage and give back alongside me filled me with pride.

All of this has me fired up to run some Piper's Peak events later this summer. The energy and passion at the show were contagious, and I can’t wait to bring that same spirit to our own gatherings—helping more women and girls discover the beauty, challenge, and healing power of fly fishing.

As the show wrapped up, it was clear that everyone was ready for the next step—to grab their rods, hit the water, and let the river work its magic.
